Today I'm thinking about the animals that have become extinct over time. An article I was reading earlier talked about human's over hunting of various species until extinction. Examples of these are birds, such as the Dodo (a little larger than a Turkey and wasn't able to fly); and water creatures such as the Steller's Sea Cow which was over 30 feet in length and about 22,000 pounds in weight, resembling a whale in appearance, but it wasn't able to submerge). I find it sad that something as majestic as the Woolly Mammoth became extinct - this was partly due to over hunting and also the climate change of its time (about 7500 years ago). Now we are living in another period of drastic climate change which is negatively impacting many species. Our over-hunting and over-fishing methods continue to pose a risk too. Can't help but wonder, what can each and everyone of us do to help protect and preserve all living things? What can we do that actually has an impact? I am hopeful we (as society) have learned from history.
