Some takeaways from my time interviewing Jorge Inzunza.

In our 2nd podcast episode of "Bilingual Book Buddies" Silvia, Alicia and I had the honor to interview Jorge Inzunza, a psychologist, teacher, and author with a doctorate in education, and an active promoter of children’s literature.

Some takeaways from the episode include:

  • Inspiration for Writing: Jorge’s inspiration comes from observing immigrant children and understanding language's role in a child's identity [07:04].
  • Importance of Bilingual Books: These books are "distinct animals" that offer diverse formats and are essential for children and parents in acquiring new vocabulary and connecting with cultural heritage [08:49].
  • Challenges: Difficulties include finding Spanish/bilingual books, especially outside major cities, and misconceptions about bilingual brains and their development [14:56].
  • SCBWI in Español Initiative: This initiative aims to increase Spanish's presence in children's literature, connecting artists from the U.S., Spain, and Latin America [18:52].
  • HILO Collectivo: Founded by Inzunza, this collective creates and distributes Spanish and bilingual books, fostering a collaborative approach to publishing [22:47].
  • Personal Projects: Inzunza is currently researching Chico Mendes, a Brazilian Amazonian fighter [29:29].
  • Encouragement for Listeners: He advises teachers and parents to listen to children, and aspiring writers to never stop reading, listening, and finding a supportive creative group [35:50]. He encourages teachers to validate multilingual children's experiences [38:30].
